March is Sketchbook Month!!

Some of you may know that this blog was spawned by Cedric Hohnstadt's "March is Sketchbook Month" blog last year. Several invited artists each agreed to do a sketch per day (excluding weekends) and post it to the blog. It was so much fun, that Jody started this blog to help keep up the momentum all year long.

Well, this year Cedric is unable to host the blog and post everyone's art this year, so as an alternative, I would like to invite our regular contributors to post a sketch a day here for the month of March. And feel free to take weekends off.

I just initiated a Moleskine I got for Christmas for the event! (See sketch of Benedict Cumberbatch above)

And if you are on Instagram, you can post drawings there, too. Just tag them #sketchbookmonth. (My nephew just started the tag.) Let's all have fun drawing!

Character Exploration

Have no idea why I this guy came to mind but thought I would post a few multiple studies from the batch I had done. Don't have a name for him...so let's just call him Dude for now. Ha! Hope everyone is having a great weekend.

Love from D. Cheney

This man concerns me....so I thought I'd try to gussy him up a little but, try to make him a little less evil and hateful.

From Chandra - "Not Pi-rats, Pi- Gerbils!"

Drawn on iPad. My daughter wanted to see pi-gerbils instead of pi-rats. Arrr!

More SpongeMonkey Studies

With writing going well on this story, I did some more color studies of the SpongeMonkey in early developmental stages, and Sid, the kid (after & before). The swimming monkey needs to be more pink, I think.

ANGEL—CHARCOAL PAINTING

Worked on this last Saturday after a long week of drawing lightsabers. The couch was calling out to me but I just needed to work on my own art for a while. This is a new technique which allows me to paint with charcoal. It started out great then half way through I lost the emotional impact I wanted and placed the board next to the trash can.

DETAIL

Later in the evening I put it back on the drawing table and started noodling here and there having fun experimenting with the pigment and then this image slowly emerged. Learned a lot on this one.

SpongeMonkey

A study of the title character for a story I'm working on. Here's he's well into the reciprocal transformation. Trying to hone in on the right style for this tale. Close, but...

Zombie Valentine

This is the card I made for my wife. She loved it.

Some say romance is dead. We say romance is un-dead.

From Chandra - Sharkmaid

My daughter (age 6) was talking to me about why "people" thought things like sharks were for boys and things like mermaids for girls. She likes them both together. Thus, Sharkmaid! I modeled her shoulders and arms after a friend who is in roller derby.

Puckwudgie

A Puckwudgie is a 2-3' tall troll-like being with enlarged noses, fingers and ears, and is half porcupine with poison arrows. They have other magical powers, can sometimes breathe fire and cause a lot of damage. Fun little schpucker to draw. Color version here.

Finished Mark Twain....and Friend!!!!

Baby Girl

Congrats on the 200th post everyone! I wish I could have been more apart of the 200 posts but it's a new year and that is one of my resolutions! So for post 201 thought I'd post up a few sketches of my lil baby girl that was born last Sept. (One of the main reasons I've been away for so long....diaper duty!!) Of course I took a little liberty in these sketches of her since I'm thinking of making this a character for something down the road. Nice to be back.

Wooooooo!

Here is my soon to be finished picture of Mark Twain and someone else (unidentified in the photograph from the Old Xerox that I took this from)
